He awoke sometime later to a high-pitched whirring noise, then a loud crunch, and a sharp pain shooting through his spine like a bolt of lightning. Through blurry vision, he spotted Matilda kneeling beside him outside the bathtub. Everything was red: his hands, her hands, the walls of the bathtub, the water, Matilda’s face.

He screamed, but no sound came out.

A long, gray string of matter hung between his scalp and her mouth. Shuddering almost uncontrollably, he stood in the bathtub and caught sight of himself in the mirror over the bathroom sink. The top of his head was gone as if someone had lifted the lid from a cookie jar.

Matilda yanked on the brain matter connecting them. “What an enchanting mind!” She slurped up each piece, chewing it ravenously.

“What the… the hell is…” He collapsed into the tub.

“Don’t spoil the moment, Gary. I can’t finish it all in one meal, you know. This will take all night.”
